1. How would you define your travel ‘style’?
Laid back, make-it-up-as-I-go, and, er, sometimes downright lazy. I hate being in a rush, and like being able to take a couple of days to explore serendipitous discoveries en route. I also have pretty spartan needs, so I find it easy to travel in a tight budget.
2. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be and why?
The Serengeti (Kenya/Tanzania), because the wildebeest migration is still going on, and I've always wanted to witness that.
3. What was your best travel experience?
Trekking in Nepal. The scenery is unparallelled, the effort is intense but intensely rewarding, the sense of adventure is very real, and the people are wonderful.
4. What was your worst travel experience?
Being mugged at gunpoint in Mexico City. Really my own fault: I deliberately went to a rough area of town to research a novel I was working on. And let me hasten to stress that despite that unpleasant event, Mexico City remains one of my very favourite cities.
5. What is your best travel advice for the TravelPost community?
Don't move too fast. If you're not trekking or on a road trip, always spend at least two nights in every bed.

Termites, fresh from the mound! On an early morning hike to Tunichil Muknal in Belize, our guide showed off by snacking on some termites, and gave us a big "of course you tourists would never dare do that" grin - so I defiantly followed his example. They tasted surprisingly carroty, but ultimately I still prefer muffins.
