- Healthy Travel: SkinWear is InWear
-
At the risk of sounding like a traveling germ-phobic nutjob, I’ll admit I rarely get anywhere near an airport, bus or means of public transportation without fishing my trusty hand sanitizer out of my bag. And while I sometimes find myself wondering what happened to the free-spirited traveling self who would most certainly scoff at the more uptight version that exists today, I can say this: once you hit 30, getting sick starts to suck more. Way more. While most hand sanitizers kill germs right when you apply them to your skin, SkinWear claims to continue killing pesky germs for hours and moisturize your skin at the same time (good for use during flights, when my skin starts to feel nigh on reptilian). The product is also non-toxic, biodegradable and vegetable-based. Once applied correctly, which requires rubbing the product into the skin for 60 seconds, SkinWear will do its thing through four rinses at the sink.
Not being scary germs ourselves, we can’t personally vouch for the product’s effectiveness. But not getting sick is good enough for me.

- Summer’s Acoming! It’s Fare Alert
-
Yeah, last minute travel can be cool. But it can also leave you cash poor, especially when you’re talking high-season travel in major vacation destinations. But as with most things in life, a just little edumuhcation can go a long way. Case in point: Kayak.com’s Fare Alerts.Create a Fare Alert (or 12) on Kayak.com or SideStep.com for the summer getaway(s) currently sequestered in your noggin by clicking on the “Get fare alerts for this trip” link on the top right-hand corner of the flight results page. You can track fares for specific dates, a flexible span of time (e.g. summer weekends or, say, the month of June) or an entire region (e.g. Europe). When your daily or weekly Fare Alert (you choose how often it arrives) touches down in your email inbox, you’ll be able to make informed travel decisions.
Depending on what you ask it to track (specific dates, flexible span of time or even top cities in a region), each Fare Alert can show you:
- How much the fare for specific dates has increased or decreased in dollars since the last alert
- The airfare history for your trip dates based on searches made by Kayakers over the past 90 days
- A snapshot of prices in Kayak.com’s matrix view, so you can quickly compare prices by carrier and number of stops
- The lowest fare available during a specific span of time (e.g. the next four weekends)
- The best fares available for popular destination cities in a region you want to visit (e.g. Africa)
Who knows, maybe you’ll still pay craptons to travel to the most expensive resort on the hottest island right in the middle of the high season. After all, it’s high season for a reason. But at least you’ll be pimping it out with full knowledge of your unbridled American excess. Just remember the wisdom of G.I. Joe.
(**Editor’s note: Yeah, Kayak.com owns us. You wanna make something of it? I’ll have you know I was surreptitiously using Fare Alerts to aid in making my personal travel plans long before Kayak.com bought our parent company SideStep.com in December. Nepotism, bias, blah, blah, blah. Fare Alerts just make good travel sense.)

- Name that Ship
-
Here’s an interesting travel contest from USA Today and Royal Caribbean: Name that Ship. That I’m a writer probably has something to do with why I am posting this, but I’ve always liked the idea of naming contests. I guess I just like the idea of winning because of something you did - and not necessarily just because of the luck of the draw. Travelers can enter the contest by choosing names for two new Royal Caribbean ships. Winners will receive all expenses paid trips each ship’s inaugural celebration (which includes a two-night mini cruise), as well as a separate seven-night cruise for two on the ships. The contest runs through Feb. 29, 2008. For more details about the contest and hints about the kinds of names they’re looking for, check out the official rules via the site linked above and be sure to read the press release.

- Best iPhone Applications for Travelers
-
I recently became one of the gazillion travelers to fall in love with the iPhone. It. Just. Rocks. Since acquiring my iPhone, I’ve been having some fun exploring all the applications and widgets that make this little device even cooler than it is on its own. To be sure, there are a slew of add-on applications, widgets and programs available for download out there. But which ones are the best for travelers? Here is my list of the Best iPhone Applications and Widgets for Travelers:
Use this well-designed application to find bars in New York, as well as subway stops and directions.
Hotel Widgets
A simple, but easy-to-use search tool for finding flights, hotels, car rentals and cruises using your iPhone. With its iPhone-optimized interface, Earthcomber helps you find what you’re looking for (restaurants, wi-fi, banks, gas stations, ice cream – you name it) and locates it on Google Maps. You can also get driving directions, read reviews and see the location of friends who also use the app.
For those addicted to this travel-friendly game, we like the simple interface of this iPhone-based Sudoku widget. There are several similar widgets out there, but this one has a cleaner appearance and also offers players a choice of simple, easy, intermediate and expert game levels. Too bad you can’t play on the plane (yet).
iEventfulThis application lets you search for events by city. If you find yourself in a new town with an evening to kill, this simple search will return plenty of options in categories ranging from Food-Wine-Cuisine to Performing Arts.
Need access to computer files, photos and programs like Skype from your iPhone? SoonR allows you to do just that. The downloadable program loads the SoonR Desktop Agent onto your home computer and allows you to search, find and share files with any mobile phone – even when your computer is turned off.
A simple tool that allows business travelers to track auto mileage with their iPhones. We especially like the way this application allows users to specify driver, purpose and distance and then exports the information to Excel for easy record-keeping.
ddicted to Skype? You can use your account to call or instant message contacts via your iPhone with this application. The only bummer: it’ll cost you $25 to download the service.
Much like traditional translators, this iPhone-friendly application offers phrases in five languages (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish). But unlike many electronic handheld language gadgets, this application will actually pronounce the phrases for you using Quicktime.
Search for flight status, departure and arrival times, airport and airline information, security wait times and current airport delays all from your iPhone.
Find wi-fi hotspots in cities around the world. Allows you to browse by country, city, address, wireless provider and even connection type. An added bonus? You can search exclusively for free wi-fi hotspots.
While many tipping applications exist for the iPhone, we like this one because it allows you to split the check among up to 10 people and offers an easy interface for viewing 15, 20 and 25 percent tip amounts alongside the bill total .

Now that the Hawaii Superferry is grounded until a judge rules whether the service can continue operating before an environmental impact report ensues, Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines are offering special $19 one-way fares to jilted Superferry ticket holders. Fares are good for flights between Honolulu and Lihue or Kahului through Oct. 31, 2007 and must be booked by Sept. 7, 2007. To score the fare, you have to have a booking number from Superferry. - Hawaii Superferry Grounded Until Next Week
-
The Hawaii Superferry - the first non-airline mass transit option between the islands - has been grounded until at least next Thursday, when a Maui circuit court will resume a hearing on the new interisland ferry service. Officially launched on Monday, the Superferry was blocked by protesters on surfboards who worry that the service will endanger marine life species and argue that the state should have required an environmental impact study before allowing the new service to begin. We’ll keep ya posted on what happens.

- Carnival Cruises Says, “Serenity Now!”
-
Serenity. That’s the name Carnival Cruises has chosen for the new adults-only area on the Carnival Inspiration ship, set to debut in October. Hilarious. Not only does it invoke fond memories of Frank Costanza yelling, “Serenity now!” but it also has the unfortunate distinction of sharing a name with a leading line of adult incontinence products. ‘Cause there’s nothing as relaxing as being reminded that someday, you’re probably going to need someone else to wipe your ass.

- Blacklisted by Christopher Elliott
-
Which travel companies make Christopher Elliott’s blacklist? Drawing from his widely-read troubleshooter column, Elliott puts together a list of four companies who repeatedly end up on travelers’ sh*t lists. And the winners are (drum roll puhlease):
1. US Airways
2. Days Inn
3. Thrifty
4. Princess Cruise Line
To find out why each company made the list, read Elliott’s Blacklisted: 4 Travel Companies People Avoid on MSNBC.
