Best Hotels for Teens

leonardo 637211 637211 ext 01 j image Best Hotels for Teens

Yesterday, we featured a hotel package aimed at families traveling with teenagers. Today, we’re taking that idea a step further and highlighting TravelPost’s list of the Best Hotels for Teens…with their parents in tow, of course.

Finding a destination that will please the whole family is difficult with young children, but becomes all the more so when you add freedom-seeking teenagers to the mix. With the help of TravelPost travel experts and hotel reviewers who’ve visited, we selected the following hotels and resorts for their overall teen travel appeal.

We were careful to choose hotels in a variety of destinations and at varying price points, while still selecting properties that we think offer plenty of options for adults and young adults. Many hotels that made the list offer special teen programs or teen facilities, while others are well known for a wide variety of water sports, recreational activities and dining options in a safe, scenic environment. And we couldn’t resist throwing in one unexpected option especially for Twilight fans….Let us know what you think:

Travel with Teenagers: Is this the Perfect Teen Vacation?

leonardo 028010 028010 pool 01 j image Travel with Teenagers: Is this the Perfect Teen Vacation?

Something tells us that, when it comes to most teenagers embroiled in the upheaval of a family vacation, perfect is a lot to hope for. But decent? Tolerable? Kinda sorta okay? Most parents traveling with teenagers will take a ho-hum shrug and a I-guess-it-was-okay over all out teen angst any day.

But it looks like the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa in Southern California is up for a bit more of a challenge. In that spirit, the resort located just over a half-hour drive south of Santa Barbara is hoping to offer teens and families the Perfect Teen Vacation package.

Good for families with up to four kids under 18 for stays of three nights or more through Sept. 3, the offer tacks on an extra room for the kids at no extra charge. While the $605 starting package rate will no doubt strike many as a little steep, others may be willing to pay a little extra to stay in a resort that offers the family-friendly facilities and activities found here. Along with golf and a spa for adults, there’s a kid’s camp for ages 5 to 12, teen golf program, teen hangout area called the Nest and special teen spa services.

Orlando Travel Deal: $10 Hotel Room (Really)

leonardo g34551 g34551 pool 02 j image Orlando Travel Deal: $10 Hotel Room (Really)

When we read that travelers can stay at one of four Orlando hotels for a mere $9.99 per night, we had to check it out. And guess what? You can actually book a night at a decent hotel for $9.99 on plenty of dates through the end of the year.

The catch? You’ve got to book at least one additional night at a rate of $35 to get the super-low promotional rate, which is part of the Rosen Anniversary Package celebrating this small Florida hotel group’s 35th anniversary. Our grand total, including tax, for a two-night stay at the Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista (pictured) over a weekend in August: $50.61. That’s considerably less than a one-day ticket to nearby theme parks. An adult ticket to Universal Orlando is $75 at the gate, for example.

In addition to rolling back the rates to what they were when the hotel group launched in the 1970’s, every hotel participating in the deal offers an outdoor swimming pool, a kids eat free dining program and rooms with microwaves and mini-refrigerators as standard amenities.

The following four properties are offering the deal through July 15 for stays through Dec. 23, 2009:

Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista

Quality Inn Plaza

Quality Inn at International Drive

Rodeway Inn International

Which  one should you choose? The Rodeway Inn International gets the best ratings from TravelPost hotel reviewers who’ve stayed there. It’s currently showing a rating of 3.7 out of a possible 5, based on 182 hotel reviews.

Hawaii Hotels Cheaper Than Ever

leonardo h18895 h18895 ext 03 j image Hawaii Hotels Cheaper Than Ever

We’ve been hearing from multiple sources lately that Hawaii hotels are cheaper than ever these days, thanks to the slack economy. Average hotel rates in the island state are reportedly down some 23 percent this year. Search for airfare deals on our sister site Kayak.com and check out some of the Hawaii hotel deals we’ve found recently below:

Honua Kai Resort and Spa: To celebrate its opening year, this all-suite Maui hotel is offering 35 percent off regular rates through Dec. 18. Note that the resort will open its second phase in 2010, so if there are specific amenities or facilities you’re looking for during your stay, be sure to ask the hotel directly before you book.

Kona Coast Resort (pictured): Via the LA Times Daily Deal Blog, we found Hawaii villas with kitchens and private balconies going for as little as $80 a night, though the blog rightly warns that the price you pay will varies depending on the time of travel and the length of stay.

Pacific Beach Hotel: Get a room with a Wii console, free parking, microwave and popcorn for $149 a night through the hotel’s Wii Are Family package, good through Dec. 19.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai: Score $1,000 in resort credit with a four-night stay at this luxury resort during select dates between now and Sept. 30.

Westin Princeville Ocean Resort: Special rates starting at $312 per night come with two-for-one surfing lessons and additional perks such as a $50 resort credit. To snag this deal, you’ve got to book by May 31 and travel by Dec. 25.

We also found some great deals today on Hawaii hotels at Dealbase.com, a site that breaks deals down so you know whether you’re actually getting a value or not.

Staycation Trend Loses Steam for Summer 2009

palm tree Staycation Trend Loses Steam for Summer 2009

Staycations are, like, so last summer, according to the Annual Summer Travel Survey by our sister site Kayak.com. Of the 4,100 people in this year’s survey, an impressive 95 percent said they plan to travel this summer. And while travelers remain concious of the economy, more than 41 percent of respondants said the recession would not affect their summer travel plans in any way.

Why the enthusiam for travel this summer? For one thing, lower airfares and frequent fare sales are making it more affordable to fly in ‘09, while an abundance of travel deals are taking some of the burden off lodging at resorts and hotels.

For summer trips, major U.S. cities and European countries are among the most popular destinations, while domestic beaches and the Caribbean are close runners up.

Even though they plan to travel this summeer, travelers say they are embracing all the cost-saving strategies they can find. To help travelers stay on top of extra fees and find the best deals available, Kayak has launched new tools that include a baggage fee calculator to instantly add additional fees and update airfare prices on its search results page, a hotel rate calendar that shows the average daily rate over the last two months for any of its 197,000+ hotels and an option to select the airports you want searched when you look for airfare.

Along with its own travel tools, Kayak offered up the following tips and reminders for recession-proofing your summer 2009 vacation:

- Try a cruise if you’re looking for a serious bargain

- The Caribbean offers many deals during summer months

- Visiting Europe is much cheaper this summer now that fuel surcharges are gone and the dollar is strengthening against the Euro and British Pound

For more ways to save, try Kayak.com tools such as Kayak Flexible Search, Weekend Search, Buzz Calendar, Airfare History charts and Fare Alert tracker.

Otesaga Hotel Opens Tomorrow for 100th Season

otesaga resort hotel Otesaga Hotel Opens Tomorrow for 100th Season

Most hotels are happy if they can please guests for just a night, so it stands to reason that one capable of pleasing guests for 100 years deserves a little virtual applause.

The Otesaga Hotel officially opens tomorrow in Cooperstown, NY for its 100th season. The historic property first welcomed visitors in 1909 to summer on the southern shore of Lake Otsego and to this day remains the kind of place where guests spend the mornings playing golf, the afternoons rocking on the portico or shooting skeet and happily don jackets for dinner – even in July.

In the surrounding area, attractions such as the Fenimore Art Museum and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum give guests plenty to do when they’ve had their fill of canoeing, swimming, fishing, hiking and sunning on the property’s 700 lakefront acres.

Have you visited the Otesaga Hotel? We’d love to know what you thought about your stay.
