Edinburgh Balmoral Package Thru April 2008

I was flipping through an old (June 2007) issue of Travel + Leisure over the weekend and noticed the magazine’s package deal to Rocco Forte’s The Balmoral Edinburgh and thought it was worth mentioning - especially since it’s good through April 2008. For $978/night, travelers receive:

- Overnight accommodations in a double room

- A bottle of Bollinger Champagne

- Dinner for two with six courses and wine pairings

- Breakfast for two each morning

That saves you 33 percent. Not a bad deal for one of Scotland’s most prestigious lodging options. And you can enjoy a package like this during season, anytime of year.

Sale on at United Airlines

airplane moneyNow that the deadline has almost passed for scoring those low, low fares from Virgin America and JetBlue, United Airlines has swooped in with its own fall fare sale. You’ve got to purchase by Aug. 20 and travel by Dec. 13, 2007 on off-peak days of the week. If your travel plans can deal with those parameters, you could snap up tickets on the cheap. Some sample routes (all fares roundtrip):

Washington Dulles - Chicago: $172

Los Angeles to London - $528

Chicago to Puerto Vallarta - $308

Boston to Washington Dulles - $128

An Abundance of New Airport Lounges

New airport lounges are popping up so often these days, you’d think the airlines are under the mistaken impression that travelers actually want to sit around at the airport. Nevertheless, airport lounges are great perks for business travelers and others willing to pay to access them. While the most impressive example I’ve heard of recently is the Qantas first class lounge in Sydney (free spa treatments while you await your flight), the UK’s Business Traveller doesn’t even mention it in its recent round-up Lounging Around.

Instead, the story mentions Club 48, the new lounge from Eos Airlines, at London Stansted airport. There, travelers are treated to wi-fi and 50-inch TVs, while in Tokyo, Virgin has opened a new Clubhouse with a sun deck and two swanky lounges for its first class (upper class) passengers. And that’s not all. Star Alliance recently opened a new lounge in Los Angeles, while Japan Airlines has revamped its lounges at Narita Airport.

Have you been to a fabulous airport lounge recently? Tell us about it, and maybe we’ll feature it here.

Love Gets Trashed And Trashes London Hotel

courtney loveWhat is it about stars and ruined hotel rooms? Maybe they freak out indoors because they can’t do it outside for fear of the paparazzi. Anyway, back to the story at hand. On her 43rd birthday earlier this week, Courtney Love reportedly trashed her luxury suite at London’s 5-star Covent Garden Hotel with cigarette butts and other such nastiness. According to one report, the rocker said the damage was caused by a friend leaning on a table and falling. And I’m the Queen of England.

One thing, however, is for certain. Court might want to lay off the facial enhancements, lest she start looking like this lady.

Hote du Vin Trades Smokes for Shacks

Hotel du Vin’s five UK properties are taking an innovative approach to a smoking ban that goes into effect on July 1. Instead of leaving hotel guests to suck down butts in the parking area or in front of the hotel’s entrance, each Hotel du Vin property will soon have wooden Cigar Shacks, complete with heated floors, wi-fi and lounge seating. Not bad.

Artist’s Eye View of London at InterContinental Park Lane

george lewisHere’s an interesting hotel package: The InterContinental London Park Lane’s Insider Culture package offers guests private tours with the hotel’s Artist in Residence, currently George Lewis (his work is pictured here). As part of the package, the artist guides hotel guests through London’s Royal Academy of the Arts and then takes them on a city tour. During the tour, the artist gives tips on capturing the city in drawings and paintings. He’ll even continue the art instruction back at the hotel, so guests can have a chance to use the techniques they’ve learned that day. As an added perk, the package includes a signed print of a George Lewis piece commissioned by the hotel. Overnight accommodations and access to Club InterContinental are part of the deal, which starts at $600.

Having a Panic Attack in London

god save the queenIf I were in London right now, I’d be doing a lot of things, but beyond a shadow of a doubt, Panic Attack! Art in the Punk Years would be on my list. The show, which features British and American art from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, runs through September at the London Barbican. Artists include well-knowns like Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Derek Jarman and Richard Pettibon.
